The group began as a quartet of percussionists assembled by Kim Duk Soo, himself a virtuoso of changgo, an hourglass-shaped drum. The group's name comes from the Korean terms meaning to play (Samul) four things (Nori). The original four players represented, symbolically, forces of nature.
